Once marked, it's relatively easy to cut the tiles along the marked lines with a manual score-and-snap tool or with a motorized wet saw. Finally, there is a perception that it's somehow more difficult to lay out a diagonal pattern on the floor than it is to lay out a square pattern. In reality, though, a diagonal layout begins by simply snapping diagonal layout lines across the floor from each pair of opposite corners. At the intersection of the lines in the center of the room, you'll begin by installing full-size tiles, using the lines as a guide.
As you work out toward the walls, you'll be installing full-size tiles until you reach the walls, at which point you'll begin trimming tiles along the diagonal to fit against the walls. Except for the cutting, a diagonal pattern is no more difficult to execute than a square pattern.
Although it's possible to cut ceramic tiles on the diagonal with a score-and-snap tile cutting, it will be considerably easier with a motorized wet saw. And if you are installing natural stone tiles, or porcelain tiles, which are harder than standard ceramic tile, a wet saw is really your only option. Or, they are available for lease by the day from tool rental outlets and big-box home improvement centers. Once you learn the techniques for laying out diagonal tile and cutting, you may well want to try the technique for other applications, such as walls, showers, or kitchen backsplashes.

Just think about a prison cell where the tiles are laid out in a straight pattern. This is where diagonal tiles come in. Because of their V-shape, diagonal tiles create an opening effect, much like how a harlequin-style tile pattern makes a room feel more spacious. It conceals out-of-square walls — With a straight tile layout, an out-of-square room will look even more prominent due to the appearance of the trimmed tiles along with the ways. They make room imperfections less noticeable to the naked eye, thus enhancing the aesthetics of your bathroom or any other small room.
Layout and installation One knock against diagonal tile layouts is the need to cut tiles for all four corners. To escape this, you have to tile from the center out, with cut tiles all around the edges. That makes up for any inconvenience involved with diagonal tiling.
I would even add a fourth point: when people see your tiles done diagonally, they see that you really knew what you were doing. For sure on the diagonal. It makes the space look bigger. I did it in a small powder room, actually on the floors and up the walls, with a 12X12 tile. I was nervous to do it, but a designer encouraged me to, and I'm so glad I did. And larger tiles actually make the room appear larger. Look at 18x18 or 20x20 tiles. Less grout lines to break up the floor.
As less grout to clean. Count me in with the straight fans. I'm guessing its not just personal preference, but regional I never see it around here, but it is an area of primarily ish year old homes. I agree with a brick pattern BUT with such a large format tile it may produce lippage issues unless it is a natural stone. Before doing a brick pattern in large format, talk specifically with the tile company and the tile setter about it. Most companies are now warning about it and it can affect your warranty.
Keep the flooring parallel or perpendicular with the walls.
