Milad-un-Nabi is celebrated to honor the birth of Prophet Mohammed. This year, the auspicious Muslim festival will begin on November 20 and will end on November The festival is also called Nabid and Mawlid colloquially. The festivities start one day prior to the festival and end on the following day. Several places across the country are lit including streets, mosques, shrines and residential areas, with colorful lights.
However, the day is marked differently by the Shia and Sunni. The Shia community believes that on this day Prophet Muhammad had chosen Hazrat Ali as his successor. On the other hand, the Sunni community, on this day, hold pray meetings throughout the day.
Several countries celebrate the day by taking out large processions in the street and by decorating their homes. Prayers are recited and sweets are distributed among the needy and stories of the Prophet are narrated.
It was paraded through the town in previous years. Milad un-Nabi is a gazetted holiday in India so government offices, post offices and banks are closed on the day. Islamic stores, businesses and other organizations may be closed or have reduced opening hours.
Those wishing to use public transport on the day may need to contact the local transport authorities to check on timetables. Large prayer meetings, parades and marches may cause local disruption to traffic. This is particularly true of areas of India with a predominantly Muslim population.
