Leaving the question to be asked again — how many bars and nightclubs will go bankrupt in Thailand? As bar and restaurant owners, some of whom have closed their businesses permanently already, continue to point out, many thousands will be forced into bankruptcy and possible permanent closure in the short-term, with thousands more the longer the alcohol ban continues.
After all, few businesses in Thailand or anywhere else for that matter can survive plus days of mandated closure, with little or no government financial help, and come out of it financially solvent. There are a few other clubs scattered throughout Pattaya, but not very common to come across. All the Go Go bars are enclosed and air-conditioned with a similar layout.
The large majority are small clubs with a stage in the middle with some stools, and a row of seating around the outside, sometimes two or three rows deep. The larger Go Go bars on Walking Street like Alcatraz are much bigger and have some lounge seating as well as an upstairs. While a lot of your smaller clubs feature your standard pole dancing some of the bigger venues put on some amazing choreographed shows that are performed several times throughout the night.
The athletic ability of displayed by some of the Pattaya Go Go girls is very impressive. Drink prices and bar fines are much higher at these establishments than at beer bars. The go go dancers can also be pushy for drinks. It is part of their income and most places have a quota of the number of drinks a girl must acquire before commissions kick in or worse — lose their jobs. So their pushiness is understandable but still frustrating.
That being said, visiting a Pattaya a-gogo is a lot of fun and some guys spend most of their time and money at these bars while in Pattaya. GoGo bars typically hire a staff of beautiful Thai girls to stand out front with signs promoting the bar and trying to bring customers inside for a drink. Coyote Bars in Pattaya are an interesting mix of coyote dancers and gogo girls. Customers are often confused by the concept of a coyote Bar.
The coyote dancers are usually beautiful Thai girls that can dance, not just move around the stage to music, but actually, have dance skills. They are paid for their beauty and dance skills and are there to entertain the customers and draw in customers passing by. More so if they have both coyote dancers and gogo girls working at the same venue. The ladyboy scene in Pattaya has boomed over the last 10 years. What was once only a handful of ladyboy bars in Pattaya has grown to dozens of dedicated ladyboy establishments.
There are ladyboy bars from Walking Street to Soi 6. And if you look closely you can often spot one or two ladyboys working in a girlie bar. If you want to meet ladyboys in Pattaya there is certainly no shortage of places to visit for a beer and a talk. While there are a few ladyboy bars that are very much in the public view, like those on Soi Buakhao, most ladyboy bar owners realize the need for privacy and discretion and have closed door venues away from any onlookers.
While ladyboys often get a bad rap in the press, most are friendly, fun loving, and welcoming if you visit their bars. There are likely to be more bars opening in the future as acceptance of the transgender community continues to grow.
Thailand in general and Pattaya, in particular, is very open and accepting of the gay community and has a thriving nightlife scene around it. There are several main areas catering to the gay community. Sunee Plaza and Soi Day night are two large bar areas. There is a similar setup as you find in the straight scene with beer bars and gogo bars, as well as some dedicated gay dance clubs. Another large collection of gay bars and gogos can be found on Pattayaland Soi 3.
