What type of filling is best

Leaking, further decay, and breakage can all result over a period of years. Certainly, any filling of any material weakens the original structure of the tooth overall, but an amalgam filling is more likely to set up these types of temperature-related fractures in a shorter period of time. In our opinion, there are far better mercury-free filling materials available that are safer, more stable, and better for the long-term health of your tooth and body.

Rich herself has not placed a silver filling in over 20 years and does not use any type of filling material in her office that contains mercury.

If you have a choice when having a new filling placed, Dr. Rich always recommends choosing something other than amalgam. However, that does not mean that you should go out right now and remove every silver filling in your mouth, or that you should go without a filling at all if your only option is an amalgam filling.

Just remember that mercury exposure from amalgam fillings is greatest when the filling is placed and when it is removed. If you plan on having one or more silver fillings removed, make sure to discuss the appropriate safety protocols that suit your situation with your dentist in order to limit your exposure to mercury vapors during the procedure.

Use of high-speed suction during removal to drastically reduce the amount of mercury vapor that escapes from the area immediately surrounding the tooth. Breathing oxygen or nitrous oxide if you are nervous during the removal to limit inhalation of trace airborne mercury vapor. Possible continued exposure to mercury especially in those patients who are heavy clinchers and grinders.

However, ceramic fillings cost more than silver amalgam fillings and can wear the opposing teeth if the porcelain becomes rough. Glass ionomers acrylic fillings often last for less than five years but are a good choice for children if their teeth are changing.

They can also release Fluoride and this helps to prevent tooth decay. Again, your dentist is the best person to help you decide which type of material to use for your dental fillings. If you have additional questions about any of these types of fillings, talk to your dentist today.

Posted on behalf of Dr. Hye Park, Green Dental of Alexandria. I just had my first appointment at Green Dental and I couldn't be happier with their service. I tend to be nervous when going to the dentist, but all of the staff were very welcoming and nice. The exam chair massages your back as you're getting your cleaning and there's a television on the ceiling to distract you from dental work.

The cleaning and evaluation was very gentle. Thanks, Green Dental! Top shelf dental care. Hye Park is very smooth. Dental experience beyond compare. I actually enjoy going to the dentist now. Once again, even the cleaning was uneventful. Love being able to look outside while I'm in the chair. Love this place and the staff. I've seen Dr. Park for a consultation only, but so far had a wonderful experience and trust she will take care of me when I come back for treatment.

She was thorough in her explanations, and referred me to an amazing Oral Surgeon to take care of an issue outside of her area. ALL of her staff was super friendly, professional, and personable, the office is in pristine condition, and overall you can tell patient care is number 1 on their list. Park has a wonderful manner with her patients! Finally, your dentist will use burs to finish and polish the filled tooth. Occasionally, sharp edges might remain after your appointment.

These can easily be fixed by your dentist during a follow-up visit. After getting a filling, it's possible that you could experience some changes in sensation on the tooth, but these symptoms usually don't last long and fade with time. For example, some people feel sensitivity to pressure, air, sweet foods or cold foods after they receive a filling. Usually, this sensitivity will decrease in 1—2 weeks. However, if you experience immediate pain and extra pressure when you bite down after getting your filling, it's possible that the filling is too tall.

This is more common than you might think but your dentist can easily correct it. In some cases, people might experience a sharp shock feeling, called galvanic shock after getting a filling. This kind of shock is caused by two metals one in the newly filled tooth and one in the tooth it's touching producing an electric current in your mouth. This would happen, for example, if you had a new amalgam filling in a bottom tooth and had a gold crown in the tooth above it.

Are you still feeling pain after 2 weeks? While uncommon, extreme or prolonged sensitivity might mean you need to pay your dentist another visit.

Some reasons might include needing to use a different filling material in the future or replacing the filling, adding a base, liner or desensitizing agent to the tooth. In some cases, if your filling is too deep, your dentist might recommend a root canal treatment. Fillings shouldn't keep you from wearing your smile proudly. So, whether you need a filling now or in the future, you can feel confident about the process and what to expect from your appointment.
